Rwanda arrests 31 preaching end-times and Jesus’ advent

Authorities in Rwanda arrested a group of 31 Rwandans this weekend for preaching end-times prophecy and Jesus' Second Advent.

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau told the state broadcast, the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, on 2nd August 2023 that the group had been inciting fellow Rwandans against the Digital ID in the pipeline.

“They are facing charges of disobeying enforcement of law and child neglect,” the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) spokesman Thierry Murangira told the state broadcast.

Mr Murangira also revealed that the investigation has retained five of the 31 arrested on 30th July 2023.

Murangira explained that the suspects are accused of disobeying the enforcement of the law, alleging that they were inciting the public against the country’s medical insurance scheme and other government programs.

The investigation spokesperson added that the accused are also charged with child neglect, alleging that the group discouraged school-going.

The offence of disobeying the enforcement of the law carries imprisonment between 5-7 years.

The penalty doubles when a court finds it to have resulted in harm in the Central African Country that is also a member of the East African Community.

The arrest happened in remote areas of Ndego, Kayonza District, reported by local tabloids over the weekend.

On Tuesday, the case went to national scenes on the state broadcast when RIB top officials recited the suspects’ crimes and the manner of their doing.

Under Rwandan law, a suspect stays in custody for up to 10 days of investigation and prosecution before a court appearance.

Members of the SDA Church

As is in other parts of the world, the members of the Rwanda Seventh-day Adventist church have suffered a sharp division since the start of Covid-19 vaccination.

The division grew bigger as one group stood with the government to support the Covid-19 vaccines while the other claimed individual conscience.

The Executive Secretary at Ndego Sector, where the suspects got arrested, described the behavior of the 31 people as a separatist section of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“They are members of the group that separated from the [Seventh-day] Adventists. They were publicly proclaiming that the end of the world and the return of Jesus [was] near,” he told reporters.

“Other specifications of this group,” he added, “they are members of the group that refused to take the Covid-19 vaccines. They are always in prayers,” he told reporters over the weekend.
