The Indian government says they are facing challenges of nationals who have continued to become Christians, forsaking the state-orchestrated Hinduism which is regarded as the state religion.

India’s regime party parliamentarian Goolihatti Shekar showed great concern for his mother who became Christian “without informing him” and then changed her phone’s ring tone to a hymn.

“Shekar raised the issue of religious conversions. According to him, his mother was converted without his knowledge” Times Now reported Yesterday Thursday 14th October 2021 about a meeting convened by Karnataka state authorities, parliamentarians, local government, opinion leaders, and many more on Wednesday.

Shekar represents Hosadurga in parliament and belongs to the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is one of the stronghold pioneers of India’s plan to hinder religious conversion and bring back Christians to Hinduism through benefits and defeats.

During the meeting, Shekar sadly reported that his “mother won't let anyone worship Hindu gods in her house, and even changed the ringtone of her cell phone to Christian prayers”, a great concern to this man of honour.

The meeting decided to survey all Christians to know who is preaching where for easy monitoring of “the rampant religious conversion” and to withdraw state facilities from Christians and those who convert to Christianity, according to Times Now.

While religion is a conviction that one freely shares with a neighbour or friend, Indian authorities make it hard for this door-to-door preaching.

Previous report

The US Commission of International Religious Freedom, in their 2021 annual report, ranked India the fourth after Burma (Myanmar), China and Eritrea in the row of countries of particular with limited religious freedom.

“The government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), promoted Hindu nationalist policies resulting in systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom,” the report said citing laws that target individuals who don’t practice Hinduism even barring them from marrying.

“In late 2020, Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, passed an ordinance avoiding any marriage conducted for the “sole purpose of unlawful conversion or vice-versa,” the report says.

The Open Door, the oganisation that tracks religious freedom, in their recent report ranked India in the top ten countries whose regimes oppress religious freedom using religious nationalism to label those who are not reverent to Hinduism as enemies of the state.

“Christians are accused of following a foreign faith and often physically attacked. If they don’t re-convert, their community may boycott them, with a devastating effect on their ability to earn income and buy food” the report says.
